The local
people recognized a few of the elephants as individuals and gave them names.
Among these was the one they called "Action" because of his unpredictable
nature, easy agitation and suspicion of people.
We were at the second pool watching a group of elephants disporting themselves
in the water, when Action came striding slowly from the bush behind us.
He stopped when he saw us, but he obviously wanted to go past us to a stram
where he could easily go into the pool.
He came slowly towards us, looking more and more agitated, and when he was
less than 30 metres away, our ranger stepped forward and loudly cocked his
rifle. The elephant then ran past us, obviously agitated, to the stream and
into the water with a tremendous splash, while we all breathed a sigh of
relief.
