We canoed along the Black Volta, Ghana on one side and Burkina Faso on the
other, until we came to where the hippos were feeding in mid-river. Tight
against the bank, we watched as they dived for several minutes at a time,
then surfaced with an audible blast of stale air, sending twin columns of
spray high into the air.
In between diving for food, they watched us carefully and waggled their
ears at us, but we had no intention of leaving the safety of the river bank.
After a while, we continued upstream, turned across the river and returned
past them along the opposite bank, leaving them in peace.
